My cat Bella normally gobbles her food down in seconds and is very lazy, sleeping all the time and ignoring her toys. She has been like this since I adopted her at a local shelter. I have had a terrible time getting her to be more active. This toy actually works though as she is very food motivated. I put some of her dinner (dry food) in the box and it took her 30 minutes to finish. Best of all it made her hop around to get her food out.

I started by getting the cardboard version, which is much cheaper. I took it back because the holes are pointed and actually kept getting stuck around my kitty's neck. This beautiful wood version is great! Sebastien figured out how to get all of his toys out pretty quickly, so I had to make it a bit more difficult by blocking some of the holes with duct tape (don't use clear tape...it's confusing). He loves this thing now. Great occupation of time when we're at work.

While I have a cat (Persian) and a small dog (Japanese Chin), I specifically ordered this for my dog (my cat is way too cool to play with mere toys). My dog is just under 6 pounds, LOVES to play with most any "cat" toy, and this box is no exception. It is so funny to watch her concentrate and work to solve this puzzle, and--what was completely unexpected is that--once she gets the ball out of the box, she actually picks it up with her mouth and drops it back into one of the holes so she can play some more!

This is a phenomenally good product. Every cat owner should have one. The fit and finish, the workmanship, are out of this world (I can stand on this box, and I am not petite), and the idea and execution are perfect. This box gives me a place to store all the little chase toys I find lying around the house (it is a far better thing to put them in here than it is to step on them in one's bare feet at night). The cat will spend minutes on end getting the toys out, then a long time chasing them, and he will come back for more.
This is a WONDERFUL toy.

I recommend this toy box for your cat(s) because it is well made to last, it provides your cat with enough of a challenge to keep it busy for quite a while, and because it is economically priced. I bought the larger box (approx. 14" square) as this size is perfect for my 2 cats to play together. It comes with 2 balls, but you can add more or put other kinds of small toys in the box to keep it interesting. Some of the other commenters have said the 2 balls that come with this box are hard to get out of the holes... but my cats proved them wrong. I have to keep re-inserting these balls to the point I'm getting frustrated. I've decided I need to substitute a few larger size balls.
The manufacturer says you can add food treats to encourage your cat to play... I don't recommend this as it is hard to clean inside this box. There is no access to the inside of the box other than the small inch and a half size holes, so over time food particles not found could mold and be harmful to your cat.
